Charcoal vs. Gas

It is “the great debate” of foodies and grill-masters alike. Which is better for grilling, the sleek and easy gas grill or the rustic, but sometimes messy charcoal grill?

We’ve broken it down for you so that you can make an educated decision on what to buy…or just know how to defend your grill to your friends.


Gas grill prices can span from around $150 to $700 depending on how serious you are about grilling.

Charcoal grills can range from as low as $20 (great for camping) up to $400 for really fancy models.


Gas grill temperature ranges depend on the brand, but are usually easy to regulate with the turn of a knob.

Charcoal is king in this area because they can go from 200 degrees (for real smoking ability) up to 700 degrees (for that great sear you’re looking for).


Gas grills are good for families with a time crunch. They light instantly and are ready in about 10 minutes.

Charcoal requires time to heat, about 20 minutes.


Gas grills have a few parts that may need to be replaced and checked frequently. Cover your grill to minimize upkeep.

Charcoal grills are easy to maintain. Just replace the grates every year or so.


Gas is great for cooking foods like fruits and veggies that can be overwhelmed by the smoky flavors of charcoal.

Charcoal wins on flavor. You are guaranteed a smoky flavor with charcoal and it can double as a smoker.


Overall, if you’re looking for a piece of equipment that can give you great grilled meals in a jiffy, go for gas. But if you’re a sucker for that great smoked flavor, no matter the time commitment, go for charcoal.

No matter what type of grill you have, if you fill it Meat House style, you’re guaranteed a good time.

    You can pretend there’s a debate, but there really isn’t. If you’re grilling on gas, you might as well stay in the kitchen.

      I agree. Live my Weber Smokey Joe and Wicked Good charcoal. And of course, everything begins with a trip to The Meat House!
